Chalkman keeps score for darts. Your games, players and statistics stay on your phone. Some things go online only when you use a feature that needs it: linking boards, sharing a tournament live, buying Club, and the ads. This page says what, why, for how long, and how to have it deleted.
Who we are
Chalkman is made by Chiggle Venture Studio, a business registered in Kenya and based in Nairobi. We decide how your information is used. Write to us at support@chalkman.co.uk.
What stays on your phone
Everything you enter for your own games stays in Chalkman's storage on your phone: players and their photos, games, scores, statistics, practice, tournaments you run without linking, and your settings. We don't see any of it.
- Backups: Settings → Export a backup makes a file that you choose where to save or send. Android may also back up the app's storage to your Google account, depending on your phone's backup settings; Google holds that copy under its own privacy policy.
- The camera scans tournament codes and takes player photos. Photos stay on the phone.
What goes online, and why
Linked tournaments and following live
When you link boards to a tournament, or share it live, Chalkman puts it online so other phones and browsers can see it. That's the tournament's name and format, the draw, the entrants' names, each match's scores and results, and each board phone's name and when it was last seen. Anyone with the tournament's code or link can read it, so use names you're happy for the room to see.
It's stored with Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore), and deleted automatically about 30 days after the tournament ends, or 60 days after it started if it's never finished. Each phone that takes part signs in anonymously: Firebase gives it a random ID, so our rules know which phone may change what. No name, email or password is involved.
Crash reports
If Chalkman goes wrong, Firebase Crashlytics sends us what went wrong and where in the app, the app's state at that moment, your phone's model and Android version, and a random ID for this installation, so we can count how many phones a problem affects and fix it.
Ads
Chalkman is free because it shows ads, from Google AdMob. To choose and measure ads and prevent fraud, AdMob collects your phone's advertising ID, an approximate location worked out from your IP address, how you interact with ads, and information about the app's performance. Google uses this under the Google partner privacy policy.
- In the UK, the EU and Switzerland, Chalkman asks your consent before any ad is requested, and ads are only personalised if you agree. In US states with privacy laws, you can opt out of personalised ads.
- Change your choice at any time in Settings → Privacy choices. You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone's settings.
- With Remove ads or Chalkman Club, Chalkman shows no ads.
Purchases
Google Play takes the payment. We never see your card or bank details. We receive the purchase details Google Play gives the app (which product, and a reference to check it with Google), and for Club, which phones use it, up to three per purchase.
Follow links
If you install Chalkman from a tournament's link, Google Play tells the app which tournament it was, so it can open it. That stays on the phone.
This website
chalkman.co.uk is hosted by Google (Firebase Hosting), which may keep standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security. The site sets no cookies and has no trackers or ads. Following a tournament in a browser loads parts of the page from Google's servers and reads the tournament from Firebase, as the app does.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| A tournament you link or share live | About 30 days after it ends; 60 days after it started if never finished |
| Crash reports | 90 days (Crashlytics' own limit) |
| Club records for your phones | While your Club subscription lasts, then deleted |
| Ads data | As Google's policy sets out |
| Emails you send us | As long as we need to help you, then deleted |
The legal basis
Where UK or EU data protection law applies: we put tournaments online, and check purchases, because you ask us to (a contract). We use crash reports and the anonymous sign-in because we have a legitimate interest in the app working and being secure. Personalised ads rely on your consent where the law asks for it. Where Kenya's Data Protection Act applies, we follow its principles in the same way.
Where it's stored
Google's servers may be outside your country. Google protects transfers with the safeguards the law requires, such as standard contractual clauses.
Your choices and rights
- Delete from your phone: Settings → Delete data removes games, tournaments, practice or players, each on its own. Uninstalling removes everything the app keeps on the phone.
- Take a tournament offline sooner: finish it, stop linking, or delete it in the app, then email us its code and we'll delete it straight away.
- Ask what we hold, or have it corrected or deleted: email support@chalkman.co.uk. Include a tournament code, if it's about one; we have no other way to find your data, as we don't know who you are.
- Complain: to us first, if you like. You can also go to your data protection authority: the ICO in the UK, your national authority in the EU, or the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner in Kenya.
Children
Chalkman is made for adults' darts nights. It isn't aimed at children, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you think a child has put information online through Chalkman, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If this changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top, and say so in the app when the change matters.
